In fiscal year 2019, the federal government obtained over $2.5 billion from healthcare providers in connection with the federal False Claims Act (FCA). The FCA, which has its origins in the Civil War, has been described the government’s number one fraud fighting tool, and has led to multi-billion dollar annual recoveries each year for the last decade.
Although 2020 was plagued by the COVID pandemic, which certain affected government enforcement priorities, the FCA remained a powerful weapon in the government’s enforcement arsenal even during the COVID pandemic. Although the 2020 statistics have not released, stakeholders expect another multi-billion dollar year for FCA recoveries.
This webinar, presented by a former federal healthcare fraud prosecutor who now defends healthcare providers in connection with government investigations, will include an overview of the FCA, a discussion of FCA enforcement activity in the healthcare space, and what to expect under the new administration.
Attendees will learn the basics of the federal False Claims Act, including how the FCA is used in the healthcare space to investigate and punish allegations of fraud and abuse. Attendees will also gain tips on how to build an effective compliance program to attempt to avoid a costly government investigation.
